The matter is quite simple. The Bible is very easy to understand. But we Christians are a bunch of scheming swindlers. We pretend to be unable to understand it because we know very well that the minute we understand we are obliged to act accordingly. Take any words in the New Testament and forget everything except pledging yourself to act accordingly. My God, you will say, if I do that my whole life will be ruined. How would I ever get on in this world? Herein lies the real place of Christian scholarship. Christian scholarship is the Church’s prodigious invention to defend itself against the Bible, to ensure that we can continue to be good Christians without the Bible coming too close. Oh, priceless scholarship, what would we do without you? Dreadful it is to fall into the hands of the living God. Yes, it is even dreadful to be alone with the New Testament.

I open the New Testament and read: ‘If you want to be perfect, then sell all your goods and give to the poor and come follow me.’ Good God, if we were to actually do this, all the capitalists, the officeholders, and the entrepreneurs, the whole society in fact, would be almost beggars! We would be sunk if it were not for Christian scholarship! Praise be to everyone who works to consolidate the reputation of Christian scholarship, which helps to restrain the New Testament, this confounded book which would one, two, three, run us all down if it got loose (that is, if Christian scholarship did not restrain it).

Frog Bank Robbers Turn Out to Be Bulldogs in Disguise

The “Frog Boys,” a bank robbing duo, have been terrorizing the Midwestern United States for the past three weeks. Now police in Kansas have apprehended a pair of bulldogs they believe at the infamous bank robbers.

“We had been looking for a couple of amphibians,” said FBI investigator Carlton Schmidt. “But turns out we should have been looking for some dogs in frog suits.”

The pair have robbed six banks in four states and face federal charges carrying over 150 years in prison.

Have you ever had a guest who just won’t take a hint? The Murray family feels your pain. They have been trying to get rid of their house guest for the past week, but so far they’ve had no luck in getting him out the door.

Cleatus the dog was supposed to stay with the Murrays for a weekend last month. But then Cleatus decided to extend his vacation and two days quickly turned into five.

Once the dog learned that he’d lost his job back home (apparently he never told anyone he was going on vacation), he pretty much moved into the Murray house.

It’s been nearly seven weeks since he first arrived.

“I need my living room back,” said Jan Murray, the matriarch of the Pasadena, CA-based family. “About a week ago I just decided I’d had enough and I stopped with the subtle hints and just flat out told Cleatus he had to go. Nothing. He sits around watching TV on the couch all day.”

According to Murray, the family even tried moving all of Cleatus’s stuff out onto the front yard while he was out one day site seeing. That didn’t deter him — he just moved in under the porch for a few days and snuck back into the house when someone accidentally left the back door open a crack.

Cody, a 4-year-old Long Island beagle, has posted a “Do Not Disturb” sign on his bedroom door after five consecutive holiday parties left him totally wiped out.

I mean, not to sound like a brute, but one of the things though that I actually think can be a drag for a whole lot of people about watching a movie about, either dealing with slavery or dealing with the Holocaust, is just, it’s just going to be pain, pain and more pain. Corgi Takes a Stand Against ‘No Dogs’ Policy

A corgi named Max has lodged a protest against the city of Nelson, British Columbia for its flagrant discrimination against dogs.

“These street markings are unacceptable,” says Ted Farro, a spokesperson for the disgruntled pup, referring to the ‘No Dogs’ signs painted on city sidewalks. “It’s a public street, and dogs have the same right as anyone to be there. You don’t see any ‘No Cats’ signs around here, do you?”

Max has organized a sit-in to protest the city policy. Police are holding off for now in the hope he will give up his cause. That’s unlikely, according to people who know Max.

“He’s very determined,” says friend Jerri Boso. “He’s been known to sit for hours — days, if need be.”
